Circular Buildings

The goal of the Kiertotalot project is to keep the natural resources used in the existing building stock in circulation for as long as possible — both by extending the lifecycle of buildings and by promoting the reuse of materials generated during demolition.

Implementers: City of Espoo, City of Helsinki, City of Vantaa, HSY
Project duration: November 1, 2024 – October 31, 2026
Budget: €808,260. ERDF: €484,956
The project enhances cities’ expertise in circular economy–based procurement and raises awareness of market-ready solutions among municipalities, while strengthening cooperation and knowledge exchange between the Helsinki metropolitan area and the “Innovative Cities” network. The project also develops city processes to better support circularity: it will create a scalable process for the temporary use of spaces and an operational plan for implementing demolition processes in line with circular economy principles.

For who?
The Kiertotalot project targets SMEs that develop services, products, and business models promoting the circular economy and high value-added bioeconomy. Research organizations, cities, and other stakeholders also play a key role. The aim is to co-develop and implement sustainable solutions that extend the lifecycle of existing buildings. Kiertotalot strengthens the competitiveness of the Helsinki metropolitan area while advancing the green transition.
Helsinki builds circular economy networks
The City of Helsinki coordinates Work Package 1: Making the Helsinki Metropolitan Area a Pioneer in Circular Construction. The goal is to strengthen the impact of city-driven circular and bioeconomy cluster activities in the construction sector and to harmonize the innovation ecosystem for SMEs in the region.
Within this work package, Helsinki is launching an ecosystem for the reuse of window and flat glass, while also developing networks and inter-city collaboration to promote the reuse of natural materials across the metropolitan area.
