Mobility Lab Helsinki

For smart mobility in Helsinki! Mobility Lab Helsinki, a co-project of Business Helsinki and Forum Virium Helsinki, functioned as Helsinki's testbed for smart mobility innovations (1/2022-12/2024). We continue our work on developing mobility by strengthening regional collaboration in our SOLMU project.

The smart mobility project Mobility Lab Helsinki aimed for functional, safe, and sustainable mobility. We supported companies and research to test and develop smart mobility solutions in a real urban environment with city residents. The project was funded by the Helsinki Innovation Fund.

A significant part of our activities has focused particularly on the districts of Jätkäsaari and Ruoholahti. They have been favorable for testing new products and services. The developing area offers a diverse range of mobility forms, including port traffic.

The project’s activities emphasized the smart mobility ecosystem, the development of Helsinki’s digital twin, and testbed activities.

Mobility Data Catalog

Within the Mobility Lab Helsinki project we developed a data catalog that provides support and continuity for the time following pilots. The data catalog compiles relevant datasets from the perspective of the digital twin of mobility. These could be traffic and mobility data, condition and context information, and data collected from street infrastructure.

We will continue our innovation activities and the development of smart mobility by strengthening regional cooperation: the SOLMU project will start at the end of 2024 and last until the end of 2026. In SOLMU, together with Forum Virium Helsinki and the City of Espoo, we will collaboratively develop business activities for mobility services, particularly mobility points at traffic hubs and related commercial service offerings.

Through testbed activities, we will continue to promote companies’ research, development, and innovation, as well as the creation of new businesses, while providing better solutions for the city and its residents.

Pilots, publications, and other materials

The pilots and publications will be found here in the beginning of 2024.

A city as a test platform?

Companies and RDI actors can recommend their own solution to the City of Helsinki for testing. We review proposals on a regular basis and aim to respond to them as soon as possible. The proposals are treated with confidentiality.
